Backstage at the famous Madam JoJo's, 1987, Soho, London
Almost forty years ago I photographed Madam JoJo's glorious Barbettes in their cramped dressing room at the now long gone burlesque/gay nightclub in Soho, London. The work was commissioned by gay publishing company, Brilliance Books. The work captures a moment in time when drag was about beauty and had none of the comedic overtones of contemporary drag.

N.B. The Madam JoJo photographs are part of a larger photographic archive of black and white portraits of leading gay literati and glitterati figures from the early 1980s to late 90s. The archive can be viewed by appointment at the Bishopsgate Institute, LGBTQ+ collection in London.
