Childhood Trauma Triggered in Adulthood and the Power of Resilience
Sally Baker, a London-based Award-winning therapist with over 25 years of experience, shares her journey of resilience after childhood trauma. At the age of seven, she was sexually assaulted, taking her 30 years to process this experience. Sally, who initially worked with women facing sexual abuse and domestic violence, emphasizes the importance of overcoming negative self-judgments and societal barriers.
In her latest book, “The Getting of Resilience from the Inside Out: A Practical Guide to Learning Resilience at Any Age, No Matter Your Upbringing,” Sally delves into strategies for developing resilience from within. She highlights the need to re-assess unhealthy coping mechanisms to effectively navigate life’s challenges. Resilience, as Sally suggests, stems from empowering oneself and learning to be strong in the face of adversity.

We rely on others for safety and nurturing to help us survive and thrive in our early years. How we are cared for - or not cared for - profoundly shapes us as we grow. Some childhoods provide the nurturing protection that helps ensure the growth of resilience, while other upbringings fail to deliver the supportive family structure where this vital capacity can take root.
Life's unavoidable hardships can overwhelm those who lack robust resilience. Without inner reserves of grit and determination, it becomes difficult to cope with losses, traumas, illnesses, pressures and unexpected changes that are inevitable over a lifetime. The shadow of past neglect continues to impact long into adulthood, making it hard to have faith in one's ability to handle whatever curveballs may come.
Yet the beauty of the human spirit lies in its potential to heal, learn and grow - at any age. Just because resilience failed to develop early does not mean the opportunity has passed. When given the proper support, our capacity to cultivate resilience remains within us for our whole lives. Wherever you are on your journey, it is never too late to uncover your unique inner resolve and strengthen it day by day. As signposted throughout this book, even small steps to change how you think and feel about yourself can gradually nurture the deep-rooted resilience that provides the fortitude we all need.
Wherever you are on your journey, it is never too late to uncover your unique inner resolve and strengthen it day by day. This book guides you to explore your past and improve. Actionable steps in the book encourage you to take even small steps to change how you think and feel about yourself, which can gradually nurture the deep-rooted resilience that provides the fortitude we all need.
