How To Avoid Christmas Shopping Panic Attacks

Christmas shopping tends to be more stressful than ordinary shopping.

It is for other people, so it’s easy to get caught up in overthinking and feel anxious about other people’s judgements or expectations. Trying to juggle a Christmas shopping budget while wanting to buy the perfect gift can be challenging.

Most people with heavy work schedules have little choice but to shop when the stores are full. You could try shopping at local independent stores or the neighbourhood Christmas Fair as an alternative to battling the city centre crowds.

Of course, online shopping is always an option. But because the shopping experience is so unfulfilling and disassociated from reality, it’s easy to forget you’re spending your hard-earned money and overspending, which can then fuel more anxiety.

Overcoming Christmas Shopping Anxiety

If you experience anxiety and need to shop at busy times, go as early in the day as you can. Try to go with a friend so you can support each other amid the chaos. Also, wear layers of clothes so if you are stuck in a queue in an overheated department store, you don’t risk overheating and fainting or passing out.

If you do start to have a panic attack in a busy shop, just put your shopping basket down and head for the exit. Get outside and breathe deeply and slowly. Your breathing becomes more shallow when you panic. Focus on regulating your breath to help you feel grounded and less panicky.

Give yourself time, and if you can resume your shopping, then do so.

Equally, if you must go home, you should do just that. You might think you’re the only person who has to abandon their shopping. But many people experience this. Give yourself a break and leave out any harsh judgments you might be making about yourself. It’s tough out there.
